Miami Falls to Georgia Tech in ACC Championship Final

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>CARY, N.C. – The third seeded Miami women’s tennis team fell to top seed Georgia Tech, 4-1, in the ACC Championship Final Sunday afternoon at the CaryTennisCenter in Cary, N.C. The Yellow Jackets (22-5) won their second consecutive ACC title while Miami falls to 19-6 overall.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Yellow Jackets opened the match by winning the all-important doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No.3 doubles. Tech’s Alison Silverio/Kacie Anson pair topped Caren Seenauth and Patricia Starzyk, 8-3, at the No. 3 position before Whitney McCray and Kelly Anderson upset UM’s 48th ranked tandem of Audrey Banada and Monika Dancevic, 8-4, at the No. 2 slot to clinch the point.
Georgia Tech took a 2-0 match lead when Anderson, ranked 111th, defeated Starzyk 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 5 singles position.
The Hurricanes got on the board when 83rd ranked Melissa Applebaum defeated 60th ranked Lyndsay Shosho in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 slot.
The Jackets took a 3-1 match lead however, with a win at the No. 1 position that saw a tough battle between the nation’s No. 1 and No. 2 ranked singles players. Top-ranked Kristi Miller handed No. 2 ranked Audra Cohen her first loss of the season by winning 6-4, 6-3.
Georgia Tech’s Christy Striplin clinched the match win at the No. 6 position with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Seenauth.
