Hurricanes Top Cavaliers; Advance to ACC Tournament Semifinals

CARY, N.C. – The third seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team avenged an early season upset loss and advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships with a 4-0 victory over sixth seeded Virginia (13-9, 6-5 ACC) Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Center. <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami (18-5, 9-2 ACC) advances to play second seeded Duke (17-6, 9-2 ACC) Saturday, April 22 at noon. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The match got underway with the Hurricanes claiming the doubles point for the 20th time this season. Miami’s Caren Seenauth/Patricia Starzyk pair defeated UVa’s Amanda Rales/Douglas Wink pair, 8-5, at the No. 3 position. UM’s third ranked tandem of Melissa Applebaum and Audra Cohen, playing at the No. 1 slot, then rallied from a 3-0 deficit to claim an 8-4 victory over Lori Stern and Kristen James to give Miami a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Hurricanes went up 2-0 when Cohen, ranked second in the country, topped Wink 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 position.
Miami took a 3-0 match lead when Monika Dancevic defeated James, who is ranked No. 116, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 position.
Audrey Banada, playing at the No. 4 slot, clinched the match-win with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set victory over Stern.
