No. 10 Miami Fights Off No. 26 Wake Forest 5-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Tenth-ranked Miami fought to win five of six singles matches after dropping the doubles point to knock off No. 26 Wake Forest 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Three of the Hurricanes’ (16-3, 8-2 ACC) five singles victories over the Demon Deacons (14-8, 6-4 ACC) came in three sets including Tim Krebs’ 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 match-clinching win over Brett Ross at the No. 4 position.
The Demon Deacons opend the afternoon by taking two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, D’Agord and Vallverdu bounced back from the doubles loss in singles play as No. 5 D’Agord knocked off No. 13 Paul 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 and Vallverdu upended No. 94 Hamar 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 to give Miami a 2-1 advantage in the match score.
UM’s 72nd-ranked Josh Cohen finished next, outlasting Cory Parr 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 on court No. 3.
Following Cohen’s win, the match at the No. 6 position wrapped up as Wake Forest’s Liron Strauss defeated John Hoyes 7-5, 6-4 snapping Hoyes’ 11-match unbeaten streak.
With the overall match score sitting at 3-2 in favor of the Hurricanes, Krebs clinched the match with the three-set victory over Ross. Eric Hechtman then claimed UM’s final point of the afternoon, downing Mariusz Adamski 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot to give UM the 5-2 victory.
The Hurricanes return to action Sunday hosting NC State at 2 p.m. in what will mark the final regular season match of the season and the final regular season home match for four UM seniors including Krebs, Hechtman, Hoyes and P.J. Passalacqua.
