13th Ranked Hurricanes Topple Eighth Ranked Tar Heels, 4-1

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. –The 13th ranked Miami men’s tennis team won four singles matches to upset eighth ranked North Carolina in Atlantic Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 13-3 overall and 5-2 in ACC play while the Tar Heels, who suffered only their second loss of the season, fall to 18-2 on the season and 3-2 in the ACC.
Though the Hurricanes lost the doubles point to open the match, Miami claimed an upset victory at the No. 1 doubles position for the second consecutive match. UM’s 46th ranked pair of Luigi D’Agord and Daniel Vallverdu upended North Carolina’s sixth ranked Brad Pomeroy/Raian Luchici pair 8-3.
Vallverdu put Miami on the board with a quick, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Derek Porter at the No. 2 position.
Miami went up 2-1 when D’Agord, ranked seventh nationally, defeated his second Top 10 opponent of the weekend by topping 10th ranked Luchici 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at the No. 1 position.
Junior Eric Hechtman, playing in court No. 4, gave Miami a 3-1 lead when he rallied from a 6-4 first set loss to Benjamin Carlotti to win the second and third sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Tim Krebs then outlasted Pomeroy 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at the No. 3 position to clinch the upset victory for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes return to action Friday, April 7 when they travel to Virginia for a 3:00 p.m. match-up.
