Hurricanes Sweep Pioneers in Non-Conference Action

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – The seventh ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team extended its win streak to nine matches with a 7-0 victory over No. 45 Denver in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. The Hurricanes improve to 12-3 overall while the Pioneers fall to 6-8 on the season. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Sophomore Patricia Starzyk claimed the first singles victory of the match by blanking Kyla Iwinski, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 position.
Third ranked sophomore Audra Cohen then defeated No. 89 Suzana Maksovic, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 slot to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 match lead.
Freshman Monika Dancevic clinched the win for the Hurricanes with a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory over Annette Aksdal at the No. 2 position.
Senior Melissa Applebaum, ranked No. 102, also claimed a straight-set victory over Rachel Sackmaster, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot before sophomore Caren Seenauth topped Lorinda Boothman, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.
Junior Audrey Banada, ranked No. 83, claimed the final singles match of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marisa Mechem at the No. 5 position.
The Hurricanes opened the match by winning the doubles point for the 11th consecutive match. Miami’s 45th ranked duo of Banada and Dancevic topped Denver’s Sackmaster/Iwinski pair, 8-1 at the No. 2 position. The Hurricanes’ 10th ranked pair of Cohen and Applebaum downed Aksdal and Maksovic, 8-1 at the No. 1 doubles slot to clinch the doubles point. Seenauth and Starzyk defeated Mechem and Boothman at the No. 3 position to complete the sweep.
The Hurricanes return to action Saturday, March 25 when they travel to WakeForest for a noon match.
