Hurricanes Win Sixth Straight With 7-0 Sweep Over Maryland

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>COLLEGE PARK, Md.– The 13th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team won its sixth consecutive match with a 7-0 sweep over No. 28 Maryland in Atlantic Coast Conference action Friday afternoon at the TennisCenter at College Park. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in ACC play while the Terrapins fall to 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in the ACC.

 

At the No. 1 singles position, sophomore Audra Cohen, ranked fourth in the nation, claimed a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set victory over No. 101 Marianne Baker as freshman Monika Dancevic, ranked No. 118, topped Veronika Subertova 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 slot.

 

Sophomore Patricia Starzyk defeated Neda Mihneva 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 position and junior Audrey Banada, ranked No. 83, downed Jennifer Dent 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.

 

Sophomore Caren Seenauth and junior Ana Rupic likewise claimed straight-set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Seenauth defeated Julia Graca 6-1, 6-2, while Rupic upended Masha Senic 6-1, 6-0.

 

The Hurricanes opened the match by winning the doubles point for the 10th consecutive time this season. UM’s Dancevic/Cohen duo topped the Terps’ Baker/Subertova pair, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles as Banada and Rupic joined to defeat Maryland’s 33rd ranked Amir/Dent pair, 8-3, at the No. 2 slot. Starzyk and Seenauth topped Mihneva and Graca, 8-5, at the No. 3 position to give Miami’s its eighth doubles sweep of the season.

 

The Hurricanes travel further north Saturday to face No. 56 Boston College. Match-time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
