Hurricanes Move Up In Latest Rankings

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– After defeating its highest ranked opponent since 2004 last week, the University of Miami women’s tennis team cracked the Top 10 of the Fila Collegiate Team Rankings for the second time this season. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Miami (6-3), who thwarted No. 3 Texas 4-3 last Sunday, moved up from No. 15 to No. 10 in the rankings that were released Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Hurricanes moved up after going 2-0 last week with victories over Texas, now ranked 11th, and then No. 22 Kentucky.
Miami is one of four Atlantic Coast Conference schools ranked in the Top 10. Georgia Tech leads the pack at No. 3 followed by No. 6 North Carolina and No. 7 Duke. The ACC and the Pac-10 are tied with six teams in the Top-25.
The highest that the Hurricanes have been ranked this season is ninth on Jan. 31. They had been ranked 13th for three weeks before falling to 15th.
Miami opens ACC action on the road, traveling to Tallahassee to face No. 56 Florida State, Friday, March 3. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
