Feb. 26, 2006
AUSTIN, Texas – The 15th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team swept doubles and won three-of-six singles matches en route to a 4-3 upset over third ranked Texas Sunday afternoon at UT’s Pennick-Alison Tennis Center.
With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 6-3 overall while the Longhorns fall to 6-5 on the season. The win also avenges a 4-3 loss in the quarterfinal of the ITA Team Indoor Championships in early February.
The Hurricanes opened the match by sweeping doubles to claim the important doubles point. UM’s Melissa Applebaum/Audra Cohen pair downed Mia Marovic/Kendra Strohm, 8-4, at the No. 1 doubles position as Monika Dancevic and Audrey Banada defeated Kelly Baritot and Courtney Zauft, 8-4 at the No. 2 slot. The Hurricanes completed the sweep when Patricia Starzyk and Caren Seenauth joined to defeat Marija Milic and Ristine Olsen, 8-6 at the No. 3 position.
With a one point match lead, Miami went on to win three singles matches to claim the upset. At the No. 1 slot 13th ranked Cohen upended No. 51 Petra Dizdar, 7-6, 6-2 as Dancevic defeated No. 54 Strohm, 6-1, 6-2.
At the No. 5 position, Starzk bounced back from a 6-3 first set loss to win the second and third set, 7-6, 6-4.
The Hurricanes return to action Friday, March 3 when they travel to Florida State in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener. Competition begins at 2:00 p.m.
