Hurricanes Top Golden Knights, 7-0

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The 13th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team topped visiting Central Florida, 7-0, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. With the win the Hurricanes improve to 4-3 overall while the Golden Knights fall to 3-4.

The unique doubleheader had both UM’s men’s and women’s tennis teams competing against in-state rival UCF.
For the third time in Miami’s last three matches, the Hurricanes opened the match by sweeping doubles. Audrey Banada and Monika Dancevic downed Megan Hunter and Kyla McNicol, 8-3 at the No. 2 slot. Then Melissa Applebaum and Audra Cohen paired up at No. 1 doubles to take down UCF’s Pamela Fernandez/Anna Yakimchenkova pair, 8-3, clinching the doubles point. Caren Seenauth and Patricia Starzyk defeated Elvira Serrot and Kenza Belbacha, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep.
Dancevic, playing at the No. 3 position, gave up only one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 straight set victory over Yakimchenkova before Applebaum topped Serrot, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot.
At the No. 4 slot, Starzyk downed Hunter 6-1, 6-2 as Cohen defeated Fernandez, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 position.
Seenauth defeated McNicol 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot and Ana Rupic, who won the first set 6-0, bounced back from a 6-2 second set loss to take the 11-9 match tie-break at the No. 5 position.
The Hurricanes return to action Thursday, Feb. 23 when they host Kentucky. Action at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter will begin at noon.
