UM Dominates in Upset Over No. 11 Florida State

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Dropping just one set all afternoon, Miami swept all six singles and all three doubles matches to cruise past No. 11 Florida State 7-0 Monday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

In both teams’ ACC opener, the Hurricanes (2-0, 1-0 ACC), ranked 39th in the latest FILA/ITA rankings, upended the Seminoles (1-2, 0-1 ACC) by winning five-of-six singles matches in straight-sets while allowing FSU to win just nine games in doubles.

In singles, UM’s 25th-ranked Luigi D’Agord downed 49th-ranked Sam Chang 6-3, 6-2 on the No. 1 court while freshman Danny Vallverdu upended 72nd-ranked Ytai Abougzir 6-3, 6-2 of FSU at the No. 2 slot.

On the No. 3 court, 87th-ranked Josh Cohen toppled the Seminoles 68th-ranked Maciek Sykut 6-2, 6-2.

After winning 6-3 over Chris Westerhof in the first set, Miami’s Tim Krebs fell in the second 6-1 only to bounce back to take the third and final set 6-3 at the No. 4 spot.

Eric Hechtman defeated FSU’s Chris Cloer 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 and John Hoyes knocked off Jason Hood 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6.

D’Agord and Vallverdu teamed up to down Abougzier and Weterhof 8-6 at No. 1, Vivek Subramanian and Krebs overtook Andrew Baily and Sykut 8-2 at No. 2 and Hechtman and Cohen defeated Chang and Cloer 8-1 at No. 3 to take the doubles point.

The Hurricanes return to action Friday, hosting No. 2 Florida at 1 p.m.
