Hurricanes Sweep Owls in Home Opener

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team gave up only one set en route to a 7-0 sweep over visiting Florida Atlantic Friday afternoon at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 1-0 while the Owls fall to 0-1.

The match opened up with doubles where all three UM pairs jumped ahead to 3-0 lead. Miami’s duo of junior Ana Rupic and freshman Monika Dancevic did not lose a game, defeating FAU’s Pia Terol/Sanda Moreno-Perregaard 8-0 at the No. 3 position. The Hurricanes then clinched the doubles point after senior Melissa Applebaum and sophomore Patricia Starzyk paired up at the No. 2 slot to down Danielle Simone and Kathrine Bartnik 8-2.  

 

Sophomore Audra Cohen partnered with classmate Caren Seenauth to claim an 8-2 victory over Claudia Knecht and Elodie Wendling at the No. 1 position.

 

Cohen, who has won three-straight matches as a Hurricane, continued her winning ways topping Knecht 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

 

In court No. 5, Seenauth did not surrender a game as she defeated Moreno-Perregaard, 6-0, 6-0.

 

Dancevic clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Simone at the No. 4 position as Starzyk topped Bartnik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 slot.

 

With the match already won, Applebaum and Rupic battled to walk away with victories at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Applebaum outlasted Wendling 7-6, 6-3 before Rupic, who won the first set 6-0 and dropped the second set 6-4, fought back from a 3-2 deficit to win the third and deciding set 6-3.

 

The Hurricanes return to action when they travel to Madison, Wis. for the ITA Team National Indoor Championships Feb. 2-5. The ITA will announce the draws for the tournament Monday, Jan. 30.
