Hurricanes Sweep Doubles Against Illinois at FIU Spring Classic

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>MIAMI, Fla. – The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team swept doubles and claimed five-of-six singles matches against No. 53 Illinois on the second day of action at the FIU Spring Classic held at the University Park courts. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Miami’s duo of sophomore Audra Cohen and junior Audrey Banada downed Illinois’ Macal Harkins/Brianna Knue duo, 8-3. Senior Melissa Applebaum and sophomore Patricia Starzyk followed suit, topping Emily Wang and Momei Qu 8-2. Junior Ana Rupic and sophomore Caren Seenauth likewise claimed a win, defeating Alejandra Meza Cuadra and Shivani Dave, 8-3.
Cohen topped Harkins in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, while Applebaum only gave up two games en route to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Knue.
No. 40 Banada topped Qu 6-4, 6-2 as Starzyk defeated Wang 6-2, 6-1.
Seenauth outlasted Meza Cuadra, 6-2, 7-5, for Miami’s final singles win.
The three-day tournament is being conducted in a hidden dual format where no team scores are allotted and results only count for individual records.
The Hurricanes conclude to action at the FIU Spring Classic Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against No. 30 FIU. Doubles will be immediately followed by singles.
