Hurricanesports.com recently sat down for a few minutes with senior guard Katie Hayek to talk about the upcoming season. Here’s what she had to say…

What kind of individual goals do you have this season?

“Individually, I want to contribute more to the team. I want to be able to use my talents in a way that will help out the team anyway I can.”

What did you work on this summer to get prepare for the season?

“I continued to work on my shot and my ball-handling. Those were the areas that I felt I really needed to work on.”

Where do you see this team going this season?

“Coach Meier told us from day one to set our goals high. She said you can’t just set mediocre goals, you have to aim high. We definitely want to make it to the tournament and make it past the first round. We definitely want to do better than last season and I think this team has the capability to do that.”

What do you think this team needs to do to accomplish that?

“We need to continue to focus. We have to stay together as a team and work on our weaknesses and highlight our strengths.”

Who is someone on this team who you think could step up and make an impact on this team?

LaToya Cunningham. She really is hustling and works hard for us. She’s a runner so we can look for that because that has a lot to do with Coach Meier’s style. I think LaToya will be a person we can count on.”

What are your feelings on Coach Meier’s style?

“She’s very fast paced, very intense, very motivational. I like her style because it’s very fast paced, like all of the teams in the ACC. That’s a huge plus because this team really wants to win this season and really go far into the postseason. I think her style will help us through the ACC.”

You are scheduled to graduate in May. What are your plans after you are done at UM?

“I am a theatre major so I plan on pursuing acting. I’ll be auditioning a lot after I’m done. Hopefully I’ll get up to <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>New York and since I’m from Pennsylvania, it’s not that far.”

Have you had any experience with acting?

“I acted when I was younger, but got out of it with playing basketball. I’ve really learned a lot through classes and independent studies with professors so hopefully that will help me in the long run.”
