UM Sweeps Doubles at UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team swept all its doubles matches on the first day of the UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Tar Heels’ Cone-KenfieldTennisCenter Friday. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Junior Audrey Banada and sophomore Patricia Starzyk paired up to defeat Winthrop’s Ana P. Novaces/Patricia Coimbra pair, 8-4.
Senior Melissa Applebaum and freshman Monika Dancevic dropped only one set en route to an 8-1 victory over Virginia’s Caroline Hammond/Shannon Stough tandem.
Junior Ana Rupic and sophomore Caren Seenauth also claimed a victory over Virginia’s Lara Alexander and Hampton Williams, 8-6.
In singles, Dancevic downed North Carolina’s Tanja Markovic, 6-4, 6-2 before Applebaum outlasted Austin Smith, also of North Carolina, 6-2, 3-6 (13-11).
The Hurricanes return to action Saturday morning for the second day of the UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational. Competition begins with doubles at 8:00 a.m.
