ATHENS, Ga. – Six members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team will be in action Thursday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southern Regional Championships held at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The tournament will run through Sunday and will showcase players from 21 different schools in the region.

Play begins on Thursday at 8:00 a.m. with two rounds of singles. There will be two flights, `A’ and `B’, which will have a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles bracket in addition to a singles consolation. All six of Miami’s players entered in the event will play in the `A’ singles flight.

Miami’s Careen Seenauth will hit the court at 8:00 a.m. before #106 Patricia Starzyk begins play at 8:30 a.m. followed by Audrey Banada at 9:00 a.m. All three players are in the `A’ singles flight upper bracket. In the singles `A’ flight lower bracket, Ana Rupic will open play at 9:30 a.m. followed by Monika Dancevic and #85Emily Mowery at 10:00 a.m.

In doubles action, which begins on Friday, UM’s Melissa Applebaum/Dancevic tandem are seeded eighth and will hit the court at 8:00 a.m. as will Miami’s other doubles duo of Rupic and Starzyk.

Seenauth and Mowery are seeded first in the `B’ doubles flight and will play at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.

Three of the nation’s top 10 ranked singles players will be in the field here including #4 Robin Stephenson (Alabama), #6 Shadisha Robinson (Georgia) and #8 Kristi Miller (Ga. Tech) as they compete in the ITA Southern Regional Women’s Tennis Championships. In doubles, there are two top ten ranked tandems in the draw in #1 Robinson/Caroline Basu (Georgia) and #7 Gabrielle Duch/Neyssa Etienne (South Florida).

The ITA Southern Regionals will feature players from the following 21 schools: Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Central Florida, Florida, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Mercer, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi, Mississippi State, North Florida, South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Southeast Missouri State and Troy.

The “A” flight singles and doubles winners along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA/ National Indoor Championships next month that will be held on the Ohio State University campus. The elite event, slated for Nov. 3-6, is the second collegiate grand slam event of the season. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country plus at-large selections will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.

The other Division I Women’s ITA Regionals are being held at the University of North Carolina (Southeast), Michigan State (Midwest), Utah (Central), Texas A&M (Southwest), Stanford (Northwest), San Diego/San Diego State (West) and the United States Military Academy (East).
