Starzyk Advances at ITA Southern Regional Championships

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>ATHENS, Ga.  – Sophomore Patricia Starzyk advanced to the Round of 16 as the University of Miami women’s tennis team completed the first day of action at the ITA Southern Regional Championships Thursday afternoon at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Starzyk, the tournament’s 16th seed, advanced to the Round of 16 after a second round victory over Georgia Tech’s Whitney McCray. She defeated GSU’s Szilvia Zsakay in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 in her first match of the day. Friday, Starzyk will square off against GeorgiaState’s Annie Brieholtz.

 

Caren Seenauth opened the day with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 first round victory over FIU’s Egle Petrauskaite but fell to Georgia’s Natalie Frazier, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

 

Ninth seeded Emily Mowery downed Mercer’s Teresina Paz Soldan 6-1, 6-2 to likewise advance to the second round where she was defeated by Georgia Tech’s Christy Striplin, 6-1, 6-0.

 

Friday’s action begins with two rounds of doubles. There, Miami’s eighth seeded Melissa Applebaum/Monika Dancevic duo will face UCF’s Fernandez/Gordon pair. Rupic and Starzyk will pair up to face Florida’s fifth seeded Benik/Srebrovic tandem.

 

Audrey Banada, Monika Dancevic and Ana Rupic will all be playing in the Consolation round after falling in the first round.
