D'Agord Advances to Round of 16 at All-American Tennis Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami junior Luigi D’Agord took a pair of victories in the first and second rounds Thursday to advance to Friday’s round of 16 at the 2005 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships held at the University of Tulsa.
D’Agord, who is ranked 26th nationally, downed Michigan’s Ryan Heller, 6-3, 6-0, in Friday’s first round before going on to out-last 41st-ranked Roger Gubser, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in the second round.
D’Agord will return Friday to face Tulsa’s 111th-ranked Richardo Soriano in the round of 16. This will mark the second trip to the All-American Championships round of 16 for D’Agord, who also advanced last year as a redshirt sophomore at Alabama.
UM 20th-ranked junior Josh Cohen also competed Thursday, but could not overtake Raian Luchici of North Carolina, falling in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, in the first round. With the loss, Cohen moved to the consolation draw where downed Marko Miklo of Virginia, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the afternoon to move into the consolation round of 16.
Cohen will face Ken Skupski of LSU – the tournament’s overall No. 14 seed – Friday morning for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
