Hurricanes Fall to Top-Seeded Virginia in ACC Men's Tennis Championship Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – Top-seeded Virginia clinched the doubles point and took three-of-six singles matches to down the ninth-seed University of Miami men’s tennis team 4-1 Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the 2005 ACC Men’s Tennis Championships at the Cary Tennis Complex.

In doubles, the Cavilers’ (22-2) 17th-ranked duo of Rylan Rizza and Nick Meythaler downed UM’s (12-11) No. 1 flight of junior Tim Krebs and Vivek Subramanian, 8-2, while UVa’s Darren Cohen and Doug Stewart defeated Hurricane senior Luis Manrique and junior John Hoyes, 8-1, at No. 3 to clinch win the doubles point.

UVa’s 26th-ranked Somdev Devvarman downed UM junior Eric Hechtman, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles flight just before Subramanian fell to Marko Miklo, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot to put the Calivers within one point of the win.

Sophomore Josh Cohen – who is ranked 60th nationally in singles – pulled his third upset of the season, upending 15th-ranked Stewart, 6-4, 6-3, on the No. 1 court to give the Hurricanes their lone point of the day, but moments later UVa’ Treat Huey defeated Hoyes, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the Caviler win.
