April 14, 2005
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team will take to Tallahassee Friday afternoon to square-off with in-state ACC rival, No. 22 Florida State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center at 5 p.m. in UM’s regular-season finale.
Taking on FSU (15-6, 6-2 ACC) for the first time as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Hurricanes (11-9, 2-7 ACC) head upstate after splitting a pair of matches last weekend, downing 46th-ranked NC State 4-3 Friday night before falling to fifth-ranked Duke 4-3 Sunday afternoon in Coral Gables.
The Seminoles have won each of their last three matches, including a 7-0 victory at home over 19th-ranked Clemson April 1.
Despite a 4-3 loss last season in Coral Gables, the Hurricanes have dominated the all-time series with FSU, holding a 44-to-8 advantage in the 52 previous meetings with the Seminoles.
UM’s lineup consists of two nationally ranked singles players led by sophomore Josh Cohen (120th), who garnered ACC Peformer of the Week honors after upsetting the nation’s third-ranked player, Ludovic Walter, in straight sets last Sunday against Duke.
Cohen is 10-5 at the No. 1 position this spring and holds an overall record of 12-7 in dual match play.
Junior Tim Krebs is currently ranked 95th nationally in singles behind an overall record of 11-7 this spring.
Krebs’ classmate Eric Hechtman boasts the Hurricanes’ best record in dual play with an overall mark of 14-3, including a 12-3 record at the No. 3 spot, and also has the best winning percentage (.625) in ACC matches with a 5-3 mark in conference play.
Krebs and freshman Vivek Subramanian are ranked 58th as a doubles tandem and are 9-0 in dual play at the No. 2 doubles slot.
Friday’s match will also serve as the final tune-up for the Hurricanes before the 2005 ACC Men’s Tennis Championships, held April 21-24 in Cary, N.C.
