The University of Miami ninth ranked women’s tennis squad suffered its first loss in Atlantic Coast Conference action when eighth ranked Georgia Tech claimed a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.

The loss ended Miami’s 16-match unbeaten streak and dropped their record to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in ACC play. The Yellow Jackets, the highest ranked team in the conference, improved to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in the ACC.

The Hurricanes rallied to win at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 match lead after suffering a loss at the No. 3 slot. The Miami duo of junior Melissa Applebaum and Audrey Banada downed Tech’s Kristi Miller/Alison Silverio pair 9-7 at the No. 1 position before seniors Megan Bradley and Staci Stevens claimed an 8-6 victory over Dasha Potapova and Lyndsay Shosho.

Banada got things started in singles, giving up only three games en route to a 6-0, 6-3 straight set victory over Whitney McGrey at the No. 6 position. Banada has won 14-straight matches and is now 18-1 in dual-match play.

No. 1 Bradley extended her unbeaten streak to 34 matches with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 14 Miller at the No. 1 slot. The win improves Bradley’s overall record to 39-1, while she remains unbeaten in 20 matches this spring.

With a 3-0 match lead, the Hurricanes would not get another point as Georgia Tech rallied to win four-out-of-six singles matches to claim the 4-3 victory.

The Hurricanes return to action when they make their inaugural trip to the ACC Tournament that will take place Thursday, April 21 through Sunday, April 24th in Cary, N.C.
