Hurricanes Fall Short in 4-3 Decision to North Carolina

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped the doubles point and split three matches apiece to fall to North Carolina, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes (9-7, 0-5 ACC) fell in two of three doubles matches only to bounce back by taking three singles matches from the Tar Heels (12-5, 3-1 ACC), but in the end could not clinch the match despite taking two potentially deciding matches to three sets.

UM opened the afternoon in doubles play with an 8-3 victory on the No. 1 court by junior Tim Krebs and freshman Vivek Subramanian, who bettered their unbeaten duo mark to 11-0 this spring, over UNC’s Brad Pomeroy and Geoff Boyd.

The Hurricanes fell on the No. 2 court, where junior classmates Eric Hechtman and John Hoyes came up short against the Tar Heels’ Raian Luchci and Jonathan Janda, 8-6 before UM sophomore Josh Cohen and freshman Ryan Waits fell at No. 3 to Aly Mandour and Sebastian Guejman, 9-8 (3).

Down 1-0 in the overall match score, UM’s Waits put the Hurricanes on the board first with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set win over Guejman at the No. 6 spot.

UNC’s Derek Porter finished next, downing Hoyes, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 slot.

Trailing 2-1 as a team, the Hurricanes’ Hechtman tied the score with at No. 3, outlasting Boyd in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 before Cohen followed suit with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) win over Luchia on the No. 1 court.

North Carolina’s Benjamin Carlotti bounced back from a 7-5 loss in the first set at No. 5 to upend Subramanian, 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the final two sets, knotting the overall match score at three-all.

With the match in balance, Krebs could not overcome UNC’s Pomeroy at No. 2, falling in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 as the Tar Heels took their fourth and match-clinching point.

The Hurricanes return to action Saturday, April 2 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on ACC foe, Virginia at 1 p.m.
