Hurricanes Fall to Clemson, 5-2

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Hurricanes lost four-of-six singles matches and the doubles point to fall, 5-2, to 36th-ranked Clemson Saturday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

Miami’s (7-4, 0-3 ACC) lone victory in doubles play came on the No. 3 court where freshman Ryan Waits and junior John Hoyes overtook Clemson’s (15-2, 2-0 ACC) Clement Reix and Ryan Cook, 8-5. Clemson was able to capture the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 position.

In singles play, 52nd-ranked Nathan Thompson of Clemson downed UM junior Tim Krebs – ranked 64th nationally in singles – in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) in the No. 1 spot and the Tigers’ Sander Koning fought of Miami sophomore Josh Cohen – ranked 87th in singles – in a three-set match (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) on the No. 2 court.

Junior Eric Hechtman, who was 9-0 this spring heading into Saturday, suffered his first loss of the dual season at the hands of CU’s Reix in a close three-set (6-4, 6-7, 7-5) match.

Hoyes was able to down Young in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) at No. 4 and freshman Vivek Subramanian captured UM’s second point with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Michael Gee in the No. 6 slot.

Up next, the Hurricanes will head to Atlanta Sunday to take on 51st-ranked Georgia Tech at noon.
