Hurricanes Top Florida A&M, 6-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team topped in-state rival Florida A&M 6-1, for their sixth straight win Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hurricanes improve to 7-1 on the season, with the win.
The 53rd ranked Hurricanes won the doubles point with wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Sophomore Josh Cohen paired up with freshman Vivek Subramanian to down FAMU’s Jarrel Williams/Vassil Zahariev duo 8-4 as senior Luis Manrique and junior John Hoyes upended Frank Green and Clifford Malivert 8-5 to clinch the point.
Miami’s 54th ranked Cohen downed Pfungwa Mahefeu 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 singles as junior Eric Hechtman defeated Zurab Zhavania 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 2 position.
Waits took a 6-1, 7-6 straight set victory over Zahariev from the No. 5 slot as Subramanian overcame a 6-3 first set loss to Malivert with a 7-6 (8), 6-1 performance in the final two sets for the victory at No. 4 singles.
Manrique defeated Williams 7-6 (5), 7-6 (0) from the No. 6 position.
The Hurricanes return to action Sunday, Mar. 6th when they host Virginia Tech at 1:00 p.m. for their inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference home opener at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
