The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team downed cross-town rival (63) Florida International 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hurricanes (4-2) extended their home winning streak to 17 matches with the win. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami’s eighth ranked doubles tandem of senior Megan Bradley and sophomore Audrey Banada defeated FIU’s Paula Zabala and Nikkita Fountain, 8-3, in No. 1 doubles before junior Melissa Applebaum and freshman Caren Seenauth joined to upend Desanka Jovanovic and Shilla D’Armas, 8-5, in the No. 2 slot to clinch the doubles point. Senior Staci Stevens and freshman Patricia Starzyk teamed-up to down Shilla D’Armas and Bruna Discordia, 9-8 (1), at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep.
(2) Bradley outlasted Zabala 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles in her first three-set match since the end of last season to improve to 6-0 while extending her win streak to 20 matches.
Applebaum made her debut in the No. 2 slot by taking a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Petrauskaite while Stevens downed Fountain 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 3 position.
Starzyk upended D’Armas in three-sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 from the No. 4 spot to improve her record to 6-0.
Banada, playing in the No. 5 position, defeated Jovanovic in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, while Seenauth came back, after losing the first set, to down Marijana Cutuk 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.
Miami improves to 16-1 all-time against the Golden Panthers, who fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Hurricanes return to action Sunday when they host in-state rival Central Florida at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 12:00 p.m.
