Hurricanes Fall to No. 8 Duke in National Team Indoors Quarterfinals

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team fell to sixth seeded Duke, 4-3,in the quarterfinal round of the USTA/ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship Friday evening at the University of Wisconsin’s A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Hurricanes, who reached the quarterfinal of the tournament for the first time since 1989, fall to 2-1 on the season while eighth ranked Duke improves to 3-0.
Miami’s eighth ranked tandem of Megan Bradley and Audrey Banada upended Duke’s 42nd ranked duo of Jackie Carleton and Katie Blaszak 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. The Blue Devils, however, went on to win at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 match lead.
The Blue Devils jumped to a 3-0 match lead after senior Staci Stevens was defeated by (115) Katie Blaszak 6-1, 6-4 in No. 2 singles and Banada fell to Celia Deltour 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 4 position.
Bradley, the countries’ No. 2 ranked player defeated Duke’s (56) Jackie Carleton 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles spot. Junior Melissa Applebaum also earned a victory, downing (108) Tory Zawacki 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 3 position.
Freshman Patricia Starzyk defeated Kristen Cargill 6-2, 6-2 in No. 5 position.
The Blue Devils clinched the match with a win in No. 6 singles after (96) Saras Arasu defeated sophomore Emily Mowery 7-5, 6-4.
The Hurricanes will next play in the consolation round where they will face Washington at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
