Hurricanes Travel Upstate to Battle No. 3 Florida

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 47th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team will head to Gainesville, Fla. Friday to take on No. 3 Florida at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex at 5 p.m.

First-year head coach Mario Rincon and the Hurricanes (1-0) opened the dual season with a 4-3 win over in-state rivals, Florida Atlantic, last week in Coral Gables.

Florida (2-0) won both of their first two contest of the season by scores of 7-0, overtaking Central Florida and most recently Furman.

Against the Owls, junior Tim Krebs, ranked 123rd nationally in singles, won the first match of his career at the No. 1 position, downing FAU’s Antello Magris in straight sets.

Junior classmates Eric Hechtman and John Hoyes also opened the dual season with straight-set victories over FAU.

Sophomore Josh Cohen, who is ranked 26th in the nation in singles, was forced to sit out against the Owls and will make is spring debut Thursday against the Gators.

Florida’s lineup boasts five players ranked nationally in singles, including Nestor Briceno and Greg Ouellete, who are ranked 46th and 47th, respectively.

Friday’s match will mark the 58th meeting all-time between the Hurricanes, who lead the all-time series at 46-10-1, and the Gators. The two rivals were scheduled to play last season but shortly after the start of the match, were forced to cancel the match due to rain.
