Hurricanes Conclude Day One of the Wilson/ITA South Regional Championships

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team concluded the first day of competition at the Wilson/ITA South Regional Championships on the campus of the University of Alabama, Friday afternoon.
Senior Megan Bradley, the tournament’s number one seed, got a first round bye in singles action before defeating Ole Miss’ Mimi Renaudin 6-2, 6-0 to get to the round of sixteen. Bradley will take on FIU’s Egle Pertauskaite Saturday in an attempt to advance to the quarter finals.
Senior Staci Stevens (91) and sophomore Emily Mowery bowed out after reaching the round of 32. Stevens defeated Georgia Tech’s Kaci Anson 6-3, 6-4 before falling to Florida’s Nina Suvak 6-2, 6-3. Mowery downed Troy `s Suzanne Jones 6-3, 6-4 but could not solve MSU’s Zsuszanna Fodor, who won the match 6-2, 6-0.
Freshman Caren Seenauth and junior Melissa Applebaum did not advance to the round of 32 after losing their respective matches in the first round. Seenauth was defeated by Georgia’s Natalie Frazier 6-3, 6-4 while Applebaum lost to USA’s Katarina Palenikova, 7-6, 6-3.
Freshman Juliette Mavroleon defeated Ole Miss’ Virginia Tomatis 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to get to the round of 32 but fell to Florida’s Lolita Frangulyan in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Bradley joined forces with sophomore Audrey Banada to down Auburn’s duo of Ashley Cowart and Nancy Peaden, 9-7 to advance to tomorrow’s round of 16. The duo will face Georgia State’s Annamaria Forgacs and Anne Breilholtz.
Miami’s Mowery and Steven’s duo combined to defeat Ole Miss’ Nika Kowkhartchouk and Carlin Cochran, 8-4 to also advance to Saturday’s round of 16 where they will face Florida’s Lolita Frangulyan and Whitney Benik, the tournament’s second seeded doubles team.
The Wilson/ITA South Regional Championships will recommence Saturday morning at 8:00 am CST with doubles action.
