Cohen Advances to Round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Josh Cohen of the University of Miami men’s tennis team downed Kentucky’s Jason Mallaiah, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships Friday to advance to the round of 32 at the Memphis Racquet Club in Memphis, Tenn.
Cohen, ranked 76th in the country in singles, automatically received a bye into the second round as a No. 9 seed before going upend Mallaiah in straight sets.
Junior Eric Hechtman, also a No. 9 seed, fell in the second round after losing to Ryan Preston of Vanderbilt, 7-6, 6-2. Vanderbilt’s Scott Brown, playing as the fifth-seed, overtook junior Tim Krebs, who advanced to the second round with a win over Tulane’s Alberto Sottocorno in the opening round, ending Krebs run at the tournament.
Miami’s Vivek Subramanian and Ryan Waits fell in the opening round.
Cohen will return to action Saturday with the Round of 32.
