Hurricanes Finish First Day of Competition at the Gator Fall Classic

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team completed the first day of competition at the Women’s Tennis Gator Fall Classic held at University of Florida’s Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla. Friday morning through the evening.
The long day of action opened up with doubles matches at 8:00 a.m. but singles play, which would have directly followed, was delayed due to heavy rain. The women’s teams where forced to wait until around 5:30 pm when the men, who were set to start promptly at 2:00 p.m., concluded competition before they could resume play.
The Hurricanes won three of the five matches against in-state and ACC rival Florida State. Senior No. 2 Megan Bradley began singles competition by defeating FSU’s Mihaela Moldovan (36) ,6-1, 6-1. Classmate Staci Stevens (91) defeated Lindsay Deason, 6-4, 6-3 while sophomore Emily Mowery defeated Miranda Foley, 6-4, 6-2.
The Seminoles came back to win the final two matches of the evening. Freshman Juliette Mavroleon could not solve Roxanne Clark who won, 6-4, 6-4 in her first day of competition in a Miami uniform. Fellow freshman Caren Seenauth made her UM debut with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Tapiwa Marobela.
Miami’s freshmen were more successful in the morning’s doubles match where they paired up to defeat FSU’s Miranda Foley and Tapiwa Marobela, 8-3. Bradley and Stevens suffered a 8-3 loss to Florida’s Whitney Benik-Boglarka pairing. Mowery paired up with FSU’s Yana Stoeva to take on Seminoles’ duo Natalie Tirapelli and Alina Mihaelescu. The Miami-FSU pair were defeated, 8-6.
The Hurricanes return to action at the Gator Classic Saturday when competition resumes at 8:00 a.m. Miami will play doubles matches against Florida before facing Kentucky in singles.
