CORAL GABLES, Fla.-University of Miami women’s tennis junior Megan Bradley (Columbia, Mo.) knocked off top-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones in the Quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Singles Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon in Athens, Ga.
Bradley seeded sixth in the tournament beat No. 1 Kops-Jones in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
“I really like playing her, she plays the game I like and is an aggressive player, said Bradley. She will charge the net and take tough shots. We played earlier this year and she got the best of me. But I felt good today. I think I still have a lot left in me, I’m feeling strong physically and mentally right now and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Bradley advances to face the No. 3 seed freshman Jelena Pandzic of Fresno State Friday at 1 p.m. in the semifinals. The winner of that match will move forward to the NCAA finals match.
The match can be followed live at georgiadogs.com.
The other semifinal matchup features fourth-seeded and reigning NCAA Singles champion Amber Liu of Stanford vs. 9-16 seed Julie Coin of Clemson.
Bradley is the fist Miami player to advance to the semifinals since the 1988 season. Ronni Reis was the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament in 1988 and fell in the semifinals 6-1, 7-6 (5) to Shaun Stafford of Florida.
Bradley improves to 37-5 overall on the season.
Pandzic (Split, Croatia) beat Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
