May 25, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla.-University of Miami women’s tennis junior Megan Bradley (Columbia, Mo.) becomes the first UM player since 1995 to earn All-American status. She advances to the Round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Singles Tennis Championship with a win Tuesday afternoon in Athens, Ga.
With the win she improves to 35-5 overall, which ties the most singles wins ever for a Miami player. All-American Lise Gregory went 35-12 during the 1984-85 season.
Bradley seeded No. 6 in the singles bracket beat Katie McGaffigan of Wisconsin in straight sets 7-6, 6-1 in the second round of the tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
“(Katie McGaffigan, Wisconsin) came out playing really well, said Bradley. I was not playing my game plan (in the first set). I had to tweak my game plan a little and not be quite as aggressive as I like to be. In the second set, I stayed calm and did what I needed to do to win the points.”
Bradley ranked No.4 advances to face No. 19 Jennifer Magley of Florida Wednesday at 10 a.m. The match can be followed live at georgiadogs.com.
(on facing Florida’s Jennifer Magley in Round of 16) “We have grown up playing each other. She is from Kansas and I am from Missouri, so I have seen her (at tournaments) since I was nine. She is a good player, and it should be a good match. Hopefully I will start off well and we’ll see what happens.”
Magley beat No. 64 Erin Hoe of Washington in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to advance.
