CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Sophomore Melissa Applebaum (Coral Gables, Fla.) clinched a 4-1 win over No. 52 South Alabama as the No. 23-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team advances to the second round of the NCAA Tennis Regionals in Gainesville, Fla.
The Hurricanes improve to 18-3 on the season, while the Jaguars fall to 12-12 overall. Miami will face the winner of the No. 1 Florida (22-0)/Hampton (17-5) match Saturday at 5 p.m.
Applebaum clinched the win with a straight set victory over Dominika Nemcovicova 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Miami entered singles play with a 1-0 advantage winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots.Audrey Banada (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and No. 4 Megan Bradley (Columbia, Mo.) quickly put the Hurricanes up 3-0 in the match with straight set victories.
Banada beat Andrea Kurekova 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, while Bradley beat Marlieke Jager 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Ana Rupic put the Jaguars on the board with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Staci Stevens (Hammond, La.) at No. 4 singles.
