Hurricanes Down Boston College, 4-0 in Opening Round of the 2004 BIG EAST Tennis Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) downed Kiernan Laughlin in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to lead the No. 3 seeded University of Miami men’s tennis team past No. 6 seed Boston College, 4-0 Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Championships at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes took a win in doubles along with victories at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles to cruise to a 4-0 defeat over the Eagles, improving to 13-7 on the year and advancing to Friday’s semi-finals where UM will take on the No. 2 seed Notre Dame.
Miami’s duo of freshman Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) and redshirt freshman P.J. Passalacqua (Naples, Fla.) jumpstarted the UM win at No. 3 doubles, downing Chris McCoy and teammate Laughlin, 8-1.
Hoyes, along with teammate sophomore Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.), sealed the doubles point for the Hurricanes with a win in the No. 2 slot, overtaking BC’s Derrick Chou and Soma Kesthely, 8-4 to put Miami up 1-0 in the overall match score.
Sophomore Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) brought the Hurricanes half-way to victory at No. 2 singles, winning over the Eagles’ McCoy in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 followed a win by Cohen at No. 1 singles over Justin Slattery, 6-3, 6-2.
With UM up 3-0 in the match, Hoyes blew past Laughlin in the first set, 6-0 at No. 3 singles before clinching the Miami win with a 6-2 victory in the second set.
The Hurricanes will return for Friday’s semi-finals with a rematch against No. 2 seed Notre Dame at noon. Miami downed the Irish, 5-2 earlier this season in South Bend, Ind. and hold an advantage in the all-time series at 17-8.
