April 10, 2004

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 40th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team could not overcome default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and 6 singles against No. 66 Clemson, falling to the Tigers (21-10), 5-2 Saturday afternoon in Clemson, S.C.

The Hurricanes (11-6), playing without freshman Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.), sophomore Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) and redshirt freshman P.J. Passalacqua fell early to future ACC rival Clemson, defaulting at No. 3 doubles.

The Tigers then claimed the doubles point with a narrow win by the 32nd-ranked duo of Nathan Thompson and Jarmaine Jenkins over first-time partners Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) and Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.), 9-8 (4) at the No. 1 spot.

Miami’s John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) and Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.) won at No. 2 doubles, downing Clemson’s John Boetsch and Damiisa Robinson, 8-6.

The Hurricanes would suffer a major setback heading into singles play as Miami was forced to default at the No. 5 and 6 spots to give Clemson a 3-0 lead.

With the match on the line, Hechtman – ranked 120th in singles – could not hold off Thompson at No. 1, falling in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 to give the Tigers the match.

With the match decided the Hurricanes’ Hoyes would down Jenkins, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 while Fuller fell to Boetsch, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4.

UM’s Purcell downed Goran Sterijovski in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to bring the final match score to 5-2 in favor of the Tigers.
