Men's Tennis Drops Match to No. 42 Wake Forest

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 30th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to future ACC rival No. 42 Wake Forest, 6-1 Saturday afternoon to move to 11-4 in dual play this season.
The Demon Deacons (10-8) took a 1-0 lead over UM, winning the doubles point behind Derek Spice and Brett Ross downing Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) and Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.), 8-4 at No. 1 and David Loewenthal and Andrew Hamar defeating John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) and Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.), 8-4 at No. 2.
The Hurricanes’ tandem of Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) and Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) would win at No. 3, upending WFU’s Todd Paul and Joe Bates, 8-3.
In singles play, Cohen would suffer his first loss of the season at the hands of No. 37 Spice, falling in three sets, 7-6, 2-7, 7-5 while UM’s Hechtman, ranked 93rd in the nation in singles, couldn’t hold off Paul in the No. 2 slot, losing in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.
WFU’s Loewenthal downed Hoyes, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 and Hamar overtook the Hurricanes’ Krebs, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (4) at No. 4.
Purcell would lose at No. 5, falling to Ross, 6-4, 6-0 to take just his second defeat in his past 13 matches.
Miami’s Fuller would earn UM’s only point of the afternoon, downing Strauss, 4-6, 6-2, (10-5) at No. 6.
Miami returns to action tomorrow, taking on No. 6 Duke in Durham, N.C. at noon.
