CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The No. 35-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team opened the 2004 season with a 4-3 victory over No. 38 SMU Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Sophomore Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) clinched the match for Miami (1-0) with a three-set win at No. 2 singles. Hechtman battled but lost the first set 7-6 to Paul McNaughton. He bounced right back and won the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 improving his overall record to 6-5.

Miami won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. No. 41-ranked Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) and Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) beat Gwinyai Chingoka and McNaughton 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) and Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.) clinched the doubles point with a 9-7 victory over Alex Skrypko and Federico Murgier at the No. 3 spot.

The Hurricanes went up 2-0 in the match as Cohen beat Chingoka in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

Purcell fell 6-1, 6-3 to Skrypko at No. 4 singles to give SMU (1-1) its first point of the match. Krebs put Miami up 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Peter Oredsson at No. 5 singles.

Hechtman beat McNaughton to clinch the match for UM, before the Hurricanes fell at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.

The Hurricanes are back in action hosting FAU Friday at 6 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Admission is free.
