4,000 See Hurricanes Practice At Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – An enthusiastic crowd of more than 4,000 spectators packed the south grandstand of Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale Friday night to watch the Miami Hurricanes football team conduct its first full-scale scrimmage during a practice that was open to the public.

The 58-play scrimmage featured extensive work by the starting units and the Hurricanes defense came to play, dominating much of the play. The Miami defense used an array of blitzes to harass the Hurricane offense into two interceptions while racking up eight quarterback sacks by the different units over the course of the evening. The Miami offense managed 212 total yards on 58 plays (3.7 avg.), including 70 yards on 34 carries on the ground (2.1 avg.) and 142 yards through the air.

“We didn’t blitz much at all last year, but we’re going to really bring it good this year,” head coach Larry Coker said. “If you have a dominant defense, you have a chance to be pretty good. That was a concern I had last year because that wasn”t the case. We didn’t dominate last year, and I think a little of it was because we were guarded in what we did. We have to learn to protect against it (on offense). If you don’t do it now, the Louisiana Tech game (Aug. 30) isn’t the time to get started.”

The Hurricanes will take the weekend off before resuming spring practice Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Greentree Practice Fields on the UM campus. All practices are closed to the public, except for the CanesFest 2003 scrimmage at the Orange Bowl on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m.

Coker was impressed with the defense, led by tackle Orien Harris, who had two sacks among his four tackles. Linebacker D.J. Williams and safety Sean Taylor each had one interception. The offensive standouts included tailback Frank Gore (seven carries, 30 yards) and fullback Quadtrine Hill, who had a nine-yard run and gained 33 yards on 10 carries at both running back positions. Receiver Roscoe Parrish had three catches for 67 yards and a touchdown, and tight end Kellen Winslow had two catches for 21 yards. In his new role as receiver, tight end/H-back Buck Ortega added two catches for 15 yards.

In the kicking game, Mark Gent made a 43-yard field goal and missed a 45-yard field-goal attempt. Jon Peattie connected on his 38-yard field goal.

The quarterback competition continued during the scrimmage as Brock Berlin and Derrick Crudup worked exclusively with the first team, getting four series each. Marc Guillon and Kyle Wright saw less time with the second- and third-team offenses.

Berlin completed 2 of 8 passes for 48 yards but finished his night with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Roscoe Parrish. Crudup was 3 of 6 for 40 yards and was sacked three times. A sack was credited when a defender was able to touch the quarterback.

Guillon completed 4 of 6 passes for 45 yards, connecting on a 23-yard touchdown pass to walk-on Tannard Davis, a former defensive back who recently switched to receiver. Wright completed 2 of 4 for 9 yards in his two series.

Friday’s practice was the eighth of 15 sessions that will conclude on Friday, April 11.
