Freshman Josh Cohen Wins The 2003 USTA Men's National Open

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-University of Miami men’s tennis freshman Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) won the 2003 USTA Men’s National Open Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.

Cohen, seeded No. 2 in the tournament defeated the No. 4 seed Erik Scharf, a former St. John’s University player, 6-4, 7-5 to claim the title.

Cohen won five matches in straight sets as he marched to the championship title.

The tournament held Dec. 27-30 featured a mix of players including juniors, college players, professionals, a college coach and the NTC Director of Tennis.

Cohen received a bye in the round of 128 and beat Kleber Espinosa 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 64.

He downed Parsa Samii, former University of Massachusetts player, 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 32 before winning the round of 16 by default.

In the quarterfinals he beat former Virginia Tech player Ryan Davidson 6-4, 6-1.

He continued on the winning path beating Princeton freshman Sratha Saengsuwam 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.

The Hurricanes open the 2004 season hosting SMU Sunday, Jan. 25 at Noon.
