Hurricanes Offense Sharp in First Full Scrimmage
Aug. 13, 2003
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami football team concluded its first full scrimmage of fall practice on Wednesday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Facility with quarterbacks Brock Berlin and Derrick Crudup both throwing for more than 100 yards.
Crudup completed 8-of-12 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown, while Berlin was 10-of-14 for 132 yards. As a group, Miami quarterbacks completed 21-of-33 passes for 332 yards and one touchdown.
“This is what we needed,” Hurricanes head coach Larry Coker said. “We actually got to play the game today, and we saw a lot of good things, and we saw a lot of flaws. I think we moved the ball pretty well on offense, and I think both of our top two quarterbacks played well. We had a muffed snap and a couple of turnovers that were big.”
Ryan Moore led the Hurricanes’ receiving corps with three catches for 56 yards, including a 35-yard leaping grab along the sideline that set up a Mark Gent 21-yard field goal. Freshman fullback Jon Beason also caught three passes for 46 yards that included a 29-yard touchdown catch from Crudup.
“Ryan Moore came up big and made some nice plays,” Coker said. “But we expect that from him, he has to do that for us for us to be a good team. Jon Beason looks good on both sides of the ball. He’s an outstanding young man, and he’s an outstanding football player. He’s tough and he has skills.”
Frank Gore carried eight times for 33 yards with a scrimmage-long 18-yard gain. Freshman Tyrone Moss led the way with 48 yards on 11 carries, while Jarrett Payton carried five times for 17 yards and the Hurricanes’ only rushing touchdown on an eight-yard run.
Antrel Rolle, Leon Williams, Tavares Gooden and Glenn Cook paced the Hurricanes defensively with five tackles each.
“The defense was able to hang in there,” Coker said. “Obviously, we had some people out on the defensive side of the ball that we missed, and we no doubt need to get them back healthy.”
On special teams, Gent was 2-for-4 on field goal attempts, hitting on kicks of 21 and 27 yards. He missed on kicks of 44 and 33 yards. Freshman punter Brian Monroe punted twice for a 44.5-yard average.
Today’s scrimmage was the Hurricanes’ final practice that was open to the public. They will return to the field on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. practice.
