CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The University of Miami men’s tennis team recorded its first win of the season Thursday night as the Hurricanes cruised past Florida Atlantic 7-0 in the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex on the Coral Gables campus.
The Hurricanes’ No. 9 ranked player Todd Widom (Coral Springs, Fla.) sparked the singles with a quick 6-3, 6-3 win over David Demers, but coach Bryan Getz noted that a considerable amount of the team’s momentum came from a critical point gained through the doubles competition.
Playing at No. 1 doubles UM’s Luis Manrique (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) defeated Ernest Diaz and Jeremy Perez 8-2. Widom and Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) clinched the point with an 8-3 win over F.J. Schofield and Demers.
The Hurricanes took all six of their singles matches. Andrew Golub (Miami, Fla.) defeated Kevin Obletz 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Tim Krebs beat Cristian Paiz 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.
Purcell earned a hard-fought win over Schofield 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Eric Hechtman upended Oscar Plotnik 6-1, 6-4. Shauny Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) rounded out the scoring for the Hurricanes with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Perez.
