Teams compete at UM Tennis Spring Fling

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – William & Mary and Central Florida took to the court Friday in the first match of the University of Miami Spring Fling at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the Coral Gables campus.
In doubles competition, Tribe pairing (Kelleher and Ward) fell to Bradu and Sierra of UCF 8-1 while their teammates (Russell and Fish) overleapt (Strangberg and Sanabria) 8-3. In the final match of the doubles bracket, William and Mary’s Malmgren and Kadu defeated UCF’s (Rosen and Auerbach) 8-1.
In singles action, Central Florida player Catalin Bradu thwarted the Tribe’s Jeff Kader 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Gabriel Strangberg beat Sean Kelleher 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. William and Mary’s Geoff Russell took a win over Augusto Sanabria 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. UCF took two straight set victories when Antonio Sierra defeated Stephen Ward 6-2, 6-2 and Paul Ramy beat Joe Brooks 6-3, 7-6.
William and Mary’s Alex Fish and Zack Malmgren rounded out the scoring with wins over Jacob Auerbach (6-1, 6-1) and Rhett Rosen (6-2, 6-0) respectively.
The William and Mary/UCF match followed the standard hidden dual match format, which characterizes all of the UM Spring Fling competitions this weekend.
Spring Fling action continues tomorrow as the Clemson Tigers face the Central Florida Golden Knights on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 9 a.m. The Miami Hurricanes will begin spring play as they face William and Mary Tribe at 2 p.m.
