Nov. 8, 2002
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami sophomore Todd Widom picked up two wins Friday to reach the men’s singles semifinals at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the second of three national championships for collegiate tennis this season.
Widom upset No. 2 seed Jesse Witten of Kentucky 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in tonight’s quarterfinals. He opened the day with a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 second round win over Stanford’s David Martin. The last Miami player to play at this tournament was Mike Russell, who captured the 1997 title as a freshman. The Hurricanes have now won eight straight singles matches at this tournament dating back to Russell’s title run.
Widom, a sophomore who is No. 13 in the Omni Hotels national singles rankings, has been extended to three sets in all three of his wins this week. He is 8-2 this season with six top-100 victories. This is his first national semifinal appearance as a collegiate player. He’ll face Illinois’ fourth-seeded Amer Delic in tomorrow’s 10 a.m. CT semifinals.
The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation’s premier collegiate indoor tennis tournaments for Division I men and women, are presented by The Dallas Morning News and hosted by SMU at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch.
