CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The No. 2-seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team knocked off top-seeded Notre Dame, 4-1, Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center to claim its seventh BIG EAST Tennis Championship in the last 10 years.
With the win the Hurricanes (13-6) secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tennis Championships beginning May 11th.
Notre Dame ranked 20th in the nation won the doubles point to start the title match, but No. 37-ranked Miami countered with victories at No. 1, 2 and 6 singles to take a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Staci Stevens registered the winning point for the Hurricanes, defeating the Irish’s Lindsey Green in straight sets (6-4, 7-5).
With the win, Miami earned its seventh BIG EAST team title and maintained its undefeated (10-0) season at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex.
Following the match first year head coach Paige Yaroshuk was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year.
Sophomore Mari Toro was named Most Outstanding Performer of the tournament.
Toro recorded a straight set victory over Becky Varnum at No. 1 singles. She beat Varnum, 6-1, 6-3.
The lone senior Marcy Hora also recorded a singles victory at the No. 2 spot, she beat Nina Vaughan, 6-0, in the first set and rallied back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to win 7-6 (5).
Sara Robbins was the other winner for Miami, she beat Sarah Jane Connelly, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
