THE BULLS COME TO MARK LIGHT FOR A THREE-GAME SERIES — Miami and South Florida will meet for gameNos. 101-103 in the all-time series with the Hurricanes holding a73-27 advantage. Additionally, Head Coach Jim Morris has anoverall record of 18-4 against the Bulls, while at Miami (1994-present) and at Georgia Tech (1982-93). While at Miami, Morris’UM clubs have gone 14-3 against the Bulls.
MIAMI VS. CONFERENCE USA — Of the 12 baseball play-ingschools in Conference USA, Miami has faced six of themforging a 90-38 (.703) record. The Hurricanes have faced SouthFlorida (100), Tulane (17), East Carolina (5), Cincinnati (3), Memphis(2) and Houston (1). Miami has never played Charlotte,Louisville, St. Louis, Southern Mississippi, TCU andUAB. South Florida is an annual opponent of Miami’s sincethe 1974 season.
HURRICANES TIE MARLINS, 5-5, IN RAIN-SHORTENED GAME — Despite playing just three innings in a rain-shortened game, the MiamiHurricanes pulled off the 5-5 tie with the Florida Marlins in an exhibitiongame at Mark Light Stadium on March 6.
Trailing 5-0 going into the bottom of the third, Miami tied the scorewith five runs on five hits and one error. With the Marlins Beninto Baez onthe mound, Haas Pratt led off with a single towards second base. MattBarket followed with a walk. The bases were then loaded on DannyFigueroa’s bloop single to shallow centerfield. The Hurricanes first tworuns came in on Joey Hooft’s two-RBI single to left field, scoring Pratt andBarket. Figueroa and Hooft each stole third and second, respectively, beforePaco Figueroa walked to re-load the bases.
Baez was replaced with longtime Marlin Brian Edmondson, who allowedGreg Dini to hit a sacrifice fly RBI to right field scoring DannyFigueroa. Brad Safchik tied the score on the next at bat when he hit agrounder past the shortstop to score Hooft from third.
It was following the Hurricanes five-run third inning that the weatherforced the game to a halt.
The Hurricanes started freshman Vince Bongiovanni, who allowedthree earned runs in the first inning, but also struck out three Marlins,including Preston Wilson. Bongiovanni held the Marlins scoreless in thesecond and finished with three hits, three earned runs, one walk and threestrikeouts. He also hit two batters and had one wild pitch.
Fellow freshman Brandon Camardese handled the top of the thirdinning, allowing three hits, two earned runs, one walk and one strikeout.
