Hurricanes Announce Two-Game Football Series With North Carolina

March 4, 2002

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami Director of Athletics Paul Dee has announced that the Hurricanes football team will play a home-and-home series with the University of North Carolina in 2006 and 2009. The Hurricanes and Tar Heels are scheduled to face off in Chapel Hill, N.C., on September 9, 2006, and in Miami on September 26, 2009.

“We’re pleased to enter into a series with the University of North Carolina,” Dee said. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for us to go into a region where we haven’t played in a while and it’s relatively convenient traveling distance for our fans. It’s going to be nice to play a series with our friends in the ACC, one of the most prestigious conferences in the nation.”

Miami’s battles with this Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse will mark the first regular season meetings between UM and UNC since 1963 when the Tar Heels defeated the Hurricanes 27-16 in Chapel Hill. Miami holds a 52-45-1 record all-time against teams from the ACC entering the 2002 season.

The schools have met seven times in football with UNC holding a 4-3 advantage in a series that began in 1946. The teams met every year from 1959-61 with Miami taking all three of those contests. UNC won the first three games of the series, taking victories in 1946 (21-0), 1952 (34-7) and 1957 (20-13). Six of the seven previous meetings took place at the Orange Bowl, with the 1963 contest being the only game contested on UNC’s Chapel Hill campus.
