No. 18 Men's Tennis Falls To No. 48 FAU, 4-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The No. 18-ranked Miami men’s tennis team fell in its season-opener to No. 48 Florida Atlantic, 4-3, in a hard fought battle Thursday night.
The Hurricanes lost the doubles point, as Andrew Golub and Andrew McDade fell to Doug Devriendt and Cristian Paiz 9-8 (5) in a tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot.
Tomas Smid paired off with Jose Lieberman to post an 8-3 victory over Andre Bauzzoni and John Johnson at No. 1 doubles for Miami.
No. 40 Todd Widom posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Devriendt at No. 1 singles and Smid beat Sandro Spotti 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot to put Miami up 2-1 over FAU.
Lieberman fell at No. 3 singles to Martin Jirak 6-3, 6-4 to tie the match at two-all.
Golub beat Bauzzoni 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot to put Miami up 3-2.
Miami lost at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, as McDade and Joel Berman each fell in three sets.
F. J. Schofield clinched the win for the Owls beating Berman 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Hurricanes return to action hosting No. 17 South Alabama Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
