Dec. 21, 2001

NEW HAVEN, CT – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced that Ron Turner (Illinois), Ralph Friedgen (Maryland) and Larry Coker (Miami) are the finalists for its prestigious “Coach of the Year” award. The Walter Camp “Coach of the Year Award” is presented by Street & Smith’s, which has been publishing sports magazines since the 1940’s.

The Walter Camp “Coach of the Year” award is selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the nation’s Division 1-A schools. The recipient will be announced on December 31, 2001.

Walter Camp Football Foundation President Bernard Pellegrino stated that the Foundation annually honors the name of Walter Camp by selecting the premier coach and player in college football along with selecting the nation’s most time honored All-America team dating back to 1889. Walter Camp, a former Yale University football coach recognized as “The Father of American Football,” introduced many innovations that brought about the evolution of the American style of football.

The Walter Camp “Coach of the Year” award recipient and members of the 2001 Walter Camp All-America team will be honored at the organization’s national awards banquet on February 9, 2001 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Walter Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
