UM Wraps Up First Day of Play at ITA Regional Championships

Knoxville, Tenn. (www.hurricanesports.com) — Miami’s Todd Widom defeated UCF’s Catalin Bradu in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to lead the Hurricanes in the opening day of the Omni Hotels Region III Championships at the Tennis Varsity Center on the University of Tennessee campus.
Widom, who received a first round bye in the singles draw, defeated Bradu in round two to advance. Widom will face Virginia’s Scott Brown in the third round on Friday.
Junior Andrew Golub opened up with a first round victory over Auburn’s Mark Kovacks 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, but then fell to Victor Romero of Tulane in round two 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
The rest of the Hurricanes opened up the regional championships with first round defeats. Senior Jose Lieberman fell to Martin Selin of Ole Miss 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Maxime LePivert was defeated in three sets 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 by UF’s Ross Greenstein. Wojciech Nowak of Georgia Southern defeated Miami’s senior Tarik El Bassiouni in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Andrew McDade also fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to Troy State’s Daniel Quiceno.
The Hurricanes will be back in action Friday as Widom advances into round three of singles play, while all six of the Hurricanes will begin play in the doubles event. Play begins at 8 a.m.
