Women's Tennis Wins 10 Of 15 Matches At Georgia Invitational

Athens, GA (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s tennis team won five-of-eight singles matches and five-of-seven doubles matches to get off to a strong start Friday at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, GA.
Senior Marcy Hora (Delray Beach, FL) and sophomore Mari Toro (Miami, FL) were the Hurricanes’ top performers winning all three of their matches.The two teamed-up to win two doubles matches knocking-off Georgia’s No. 1 doubles team of Lori Grey and Tina Hojnik, 9-8 (6), in the morning session followed by an 8-5 upset win over Becky Varnum and Lindsey Green of Notre Dame, the 23rd ranked team in the country.
Toro pulled off another upset in singles crushing Varnum, the 48th-ranked player in the nation, in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Hora was also a winner in singles defeating Green 6-1, 6-1.
Other Hurricanes winning singles matches included freshman Staci Stevens (Hammond, LA) who beat Katie Cunha (Notre Dame) 6-2, 6-2, sophomore Abby Smith (Chicago, IL) who knocked-off Susan Donohue (Notre Dame) 7-5, 6-0, and junior Igna deVilliers (Capetown, South Africa) who defeated Michelle Hamilton (Notre Dame) 6-2, 6-3.
Competition continues on Saturday with UM facing Kansas State in doubles at 8:30 a.m. Miami will then take on Georgia in both singles and doubles at 12:30 p.m.
