2000-01 Season Review

The Hurricanes are coming out of an impressive 2000-01 season as they captured their seventh BIG EAST Championship title, hosted their first-ever NCAA Regional and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen Tournament in Athens, Georgia.

Head Coach Jay Berger earned BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season after leading the Hurricanes to back-to-back conference titles.

Senior Michael Lang garnered BIG EAST Player of the Year and competed in the singles portion of the NCAA Tournament.

Miami finished the season with a record of 21-4 ranked No.11 in the nation.

Where they rank

Miami newcomer Todd Widom (Coral Springs, Fla.) is ranked the No. 100 singles player in the nation, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) national fall rankings.

The freshman out of J.P. Taravella High School was ranked No. 3 in the nation in Boys’ 18.

Widom and senior Tomas Smid are ranked No. 36 in the nation in doubles play without ever playing a collegiate match together.

Smid was instrumental last year in guiding the Hurricanes to their seventh conference title as he finished the 2000-01 season with a 19-12 record in doubles action with Peter Hoffman.
